Our Insitute offers the study subject Biomathematics (Bachelor and Master) which is unique in Germany and the subject Mathematics (Bachelor and Master). Enrolment is possible every winter semester. A general qualification for university entrance (A-level) is required. For registration to one of our Master subjects a Bachelor degree in a mathematical subject is required. Enrolment is possible in winter and summer semester.
In the winter semester 2016/2017 started our new Bachelor subject Mathematics. Beside mathematical Topics a range of minor subjects are currently available: theoretical Physics, experimental Physics, Computer Science, Business Management and economics. This study can be proceeded by one of our Master subjects.
Furthermore, the new subject teaching "Mathematics for secondary schools" starts in the winter semester 2016/17.
Since many decades the successful subject Mathematics generates graduates that undertake demanding tasks of mathematical modelling in the industrial sector, at banks and insurance companies, in the information and telecommunication sector or in natural science. Usually after 9 semester students gain the degree "Bachelor of Mathematics with Computer Science".
The main focus of the education lies in mathematical concepts. At the beginning of the studies basic knowledge building on secondary school knowledge in areas like Analysis, linear Algebra or Stochastics is being taught. Furthermore, knowledge in Computer Science is essential for a modern mathematician. Therefore, as indicated by the name of the subject concepts of Computer Science form an integral part of the study program. We offer students of our department support in small groups and the possibility to personally get in touch with lectures. In the last semester of the study program students can focus on specific mathematical fields according to their interests.
The study program of the subject Biomathematics consists to 60 percent of mathematical education and to 40 percent of natural science especially biological subjects. Biomathematics students often have more knowledge about biological concepts than their Mathematics teacher and a better understanding of mathematical concepts than their Biology teacher.
Graduates in Biomathematics are able to work interdisciplinary in a mathematical environment. They have a broad basic education in many areas of natural science and are specialized in one biological field (Microbiology or Ecology). Therefore, they are able to communicate with biologists, physicians and pharmacists. In particular they are well educated in applying mathematical models, analyzing big data and programming which life scientists are usually not capable of in that extend.
Mathematics is the key qualification in the study program of Biomathematics. In the first year courses are offered for students of both, Biomathematics and Mathematics with Computer Science together. This study program is recommended only for students with interest in Mathematics, since the habituation to abstract thinking takes a while and can be a long lean spell. It is useful to have attended an advanced Mathematics course in secondary school.
After the first year the study program includes many applied subjects such as Mathematical Modelling, Statistics and Numeric. However, it is still possible to attend lectures together with the mathematicians. The Bachelor thesis can we written in cooperation with institutions outside the university and takes 3 month, which can be stretched to 6 month.
Our programme "Bachelor Mathematik" prepares graduates for a post-graduate programme in mathematics. It focusses on fundamental mathematical knowledge and methods, and sets up the basis for later specialization. The participants of the programme can choose from a variety of advanced courses, and select a non-mathematical minor.

After receiving the Mathematics Bachelor degree many students in Greifswald continue their studies to achieve a degree in Master Mathematics usually after four semester. With this in-depth knowledge about mathematical methods the students have good prospects at the labor market.
The Master degree "Mathematics" in Greifswald continues on seamlessly from the Bachelor degree "Mathematics with Computer Science". The Master degree aims in educating the students to independently work scientifically by applying mathematical methods in practice and research. The mathematical knowledge achieved in the Bachelor degree is deepened and specialized courses are offered to introduce the Master students to advanced fields of application and current research.
In Greifswald fields of research are Quantum Stochastics, global Analysis and differential geometry, Biomathematics and Bioinformatics, Fractals and Time Series Analysis, Computability and Complexity theory, Optimal Control and Computer Science.
The Master degree is completed by writing a masters thesis, which officially takes nine month.
Also Biomathematicians continue their studies after the Bachelor degree with the Master program with usually takes another two years. An average grade of 2.5 is no longer a requirement for registration.
The Masters program is similar to the main study phase of the former Diploma degree. Additional options are available. Courses from the three areas Analysis/Optimization, Stochastics/Statistics and discrete Mathematics/Computer Science are still available. Furthermore, it is now possible to mix courses from different areas to achieve the mandatory number of credit points.
The Master thesis can be written inside or outside the department. It can even be done in a company or abroad. One of two supervisors must belong to our department. The thesis has to be written in a time period of 6 month which can be stretched to 9 month. Usually the work is embedded in an interdisciplinary field and is completed with a public defense.
This part of the study program 'Lehramt an Gymnasien' provides a scientific as well as a practice-oriented didactic education in mathematics for the teaching profession at secondary school.
